Curaçao has become my home, my muse, and a conscious choice.
As an artist, Curaçao has always held a special place in my heart. Beyond the fact that my father was born here, the island first became my sanctuary, a place where I could slow down, find peace, and reconnect with my creativity. Coming from the fast-paced rhythm of life in the Netherlands, Curaçao showed me that there is another way to live. It taught me that the pace at which we move through life is, ultimately, a conscious choice we are allowed to make for ourselves.
My father always dreamed of returning to the island one day, but I wasn’t yet sure whether Curaçao could become my home as well. After graduating from the Academy of Arts in Maastricht, I decided to take a leap of faith and stay for three months, giving myself the opportunity to truly experience this way of life. Those three months quietly unfolded into two beautiful years of living here.
After two years of calling Curaçao home, I’ve realized that one of the greatest lessons this island has taught me is to trust the way life naturally unfolds. When I first arrived, I didn’t know whether this island would truly become my place. Instead of searching for certainty, I learned to trust that the answers would reveal themselves with time. Curaçao taught me that not everything has to be understood immediately. Some answers aren’t found through thinking, they’re found through living, feeling, and allowing yourself to be fully present.
Being fully present has become the foundation of the way I create. Although photography is my primary medium, I see myself more as simply a photographer. I see myself as a storyteller, someone who uses photography to capture emotions, perspectives, and narratives that invite people to see the familiar in a different light. I like to give myself the freedom to explore different mediums and embrace multiple ways of creating, to add value. What fulfills me is translating something that already exists into an image that inspires others to pause, reflect, and experience it from a new perspective.
Living on Curaçao has only strengthened that desire. The island constantly invites you to look beyond what is obvious. It encourages curiosity, rewards presence, and reminds you that beauty often reveals itself when you take the time to truly observe.
Curaçao also offers space, not only physically, but mentally and creatively. It is a place where you feel encouraged to grow and to contribute. I believe everyone longs to add something meaningful to the world, and on an island like this, you quickly discover that everything is built on connection and collaboration. There is room to create, to share, and to become part of something bigger than yourself. For me, the greatest privilege is being able to capture the island’s stories and share them with others.
The profound sense of community is another reason I fell in love with this island. Because life happens outdoors, connection comes naturally. People move through life with a sense of openness and ease, creating space for genuine encounters and lasting relationships. On Curaçao, people don’t simply live alongside one another; they truly live with one another.
Beyond its people, the island’s landscape continues to inspire me every single day. You can stand on the rugged cliffs of Shete Boka, watching the waves crash wildly against the rocks, or choose a quiet walk along the salt plains, where the only sounds are the wind and the birds. That contrast reflects life on the island as a whole: there is a vibrant, bustling energy for those who want it, but always a peaceful refuge for those seeking stillness. That is the true magic of Curaçao: the island adapts to your rhythm, not the other way around.
Curaçao has become my home, my muse, and a conscious choice. Through my work, I hope to share not only its beauty, but also the feeling it has given me. My invitation is simple, step into the rhythm of this island, and allow your own story to unfold.
